Most charities compete for the same pool of funds limited by the budget of donors in the community. The demand keeps going up while the supply is declining due to increasing financial stress and “donor fatigue”. Some charities resort to employing collection agencies who adopt aggressive methods of soliciting funds on the streets and knocking on doors. There is evidence that such pushy methods are producing a backlash from the public and could indeed have a net negative effect not just on collections, but on public perception of the charity organisation’s public image.
AngelAuctions provides a new stream of donations for charities. It's easy for people to donate and provides an ethical and sustainable way to dispose of surplus/unwanted possessions.
AngelAuctions is based in Melbourne, targeting buyers, sellers and charities throughout Australia.
AngelAuctions provides a simple way for people to donate in kind – by selling their goods online and directing the proceeds to their favourite charity. For charities, it opens up an untapped source of donations that is outside the traditional charity budget pool. For donors, it provides a painless way to give, an ethical and sustainable way to dispose of surplus/unwanted possessions, and as an added bonus, a tax-deduction for their donation. As an online auction platform, AngelAuctions extracts the highest value from the market through wider exposure and adding a competitive element to the sale.
People would be going to AngelAuctions as their first port of call whenever they want to sell or buy non-commercial items. The funds raised would help reinforce Melbourne as the home of the community sector in Australia.
The key challenges are:
1. Quickly acquire a critical mass of signed up members
2. Populate the site with enough inventory for sale on Day 1 when it opens to the public
3. Pre-launch, sign up a range of charity organisations to participate in the project
We plan to use social media and association with groups like Collaboratory to spread the word to the community, get the support of charities, and recruit supporters who will be given early access to the beta site to populate inventory before launch day.
One immediate need is to create a short web video for the landing page of the site that explains how AngelAuction works. We do not have budget to pay commercial rates for the production of this video so we’re looking for a video animator who is willing to make the video at a reduced rate, possibly a small upfront payment plus a further payment after revenue starts to flow, in exchange for credits on the site.
